AUDITION MATERIAL
Below each character description, you will find a link to the dialogue, sheet music, backing tracks and guide tracks to the songs required for your initial video audition.
SHREK
(Male, Adult – High Baritone / Tenor - A2-G#4) - Our story's title character. A big, green, terrifying ogre who lives alone in a swamp. He embarks on a journey to rid his land of fairytale creatures and, along the way, falls in love with Fiona. Begins as a grumpy hermit, but reveals his layers and eventually becomes the hero. Excellent singer and actor.

PRINCESS FIONA
(Female, Adult – Soprano / High Belter - F3-G6) - The beautiful princess of Far-Far-Away, she transforms into an ogre every night when the sun sets. Rescued by Shrek and eventually falls in love with him. Quirky, blunt, and multitalented, she is not an ordinary princess. Excellent singer and actor with great comic timing.

Sing to bar 95 (This is a duet with Shrek. You are only required to sing Fiona's lines. There is a portion of the piece that is only sung by Shrek. You can either let it run or cut it out of the video if you prefer).
DONKEY
(Male, Adult – High Baritone / Tenor or Alto with High Belt - C3-B4) - A talking donkey who joins Shrek on the run from Farquaad's guards. Quite the chatterbox, he is not deterred by Shrek's looks and practically forces himself into his good graces. Easily frightened and pushy, but also an optimist with heart. Excellent singer and comic actor with a huge personality.

LORD FARQUAAD
(Male – High Baritone - B2-D5) – The comically short, ruthless ruler of Duloc. He is in search of a princess to marry so that he can become king. Has an intensely unfair bias against fairytale creatures that stems from a resentment of his father. Self-absorbed, lonely, and cruel. Excellent singer and comic actor. Actor must be able to play this role on his knees for the whole show.

Audition notes:
In the 'guide track', Farquaad doesn't begin singing until around the 1:20 mark. There are also extra parts at the end that are not in the audition track or sheet music.
YOUNG FIONA
(Female – Soprano with Strong Belt) – Princess Fiona as a little girl. Sings a solo in “I Know It’s Today” with Teen Fiona and Fiona. May double as Young Shrek, Baby Bear, or Grumpy Dwarf.

NB: This is the only role where we are considering casting someone under eighteen years of age. The successful cast member will be able to play a convincing 10-13 year old. We are also looking at the possibility of casting a different Young Fiona in each town on the tour.

ALL OTHER ROLES
All other actors, as well as playing the characters below, will also play Citizens of Duloc, Guards, other fairy tale characters, etc. If you want to audition for any of the following characters please include one or more of the sides below and/or vocals as required, as well as the the track below.
When reading the sides, unless a specified accent is given in the description, please adopt a soft generic mid-western American accent.
Auditionees are also required to include the dance component of their audition in the video. An istructional guide and backing track can be found below the company vocal information.

DRAGON / PIG 2 / BLIND MOUSE
(Female – Alto with Big Belt - F3-Eb5)
It is possible but not absolute that these three roles will be played by the same person.

The DRAGON has been charged with guarding Princess Fiona in her isolated castle. She eventually falls in love with Donkey and attempts to keep him there forever. Imposing and flirtatious, but tired of her job as the glorified baby-sitter. She sings “Forever” with her Knight back-up singers.
​
PIG 2 is part of a trio of 3 timid little pigs. Please read the lines in a German accent.
​
There is no specific audition track for one of the 3 BLIND MICE who make an appearance as backup singers and dancers in one of Donkey's songs.

DRAGON - Donkey's section of the song (Bars 56-84) has been removed from the backing track.

PINOCCHIO / THELONIUS
(Male – Tenor with falsetto or Soprano / Alto - B3-C#5)
It is possible but not absolute that these two roles will be played by the same person.
PINOCCHIO is leader of the fairy-tale creatures. Although portrayed by a live actor, Pinocchio is an animated puppet whose nose grows every time he lies. Plenty of sass with a penchant for lying, he leads the troupe of Fairy-tale Creatures in the musical number “Story of My Life”.

THELONIUS is Lord Farquaad's personal assistant. He is intimidating to see but has a slow and dopey southern drawl.
​

Sing to bar 25. Please adopt a high pitched southern American drawl accent (similar to the one given in the guide track).
TEEN FIONA / UGLY DUCKLING / BLIND MOUSE
(Female – Soprano with Strong Belt)

It is possible but not absolute that these three roles will be played by the same person.
​
PRINCESS FIONA as a teenager. Sings a solo in “I Know It’s Today” with Young Fiona and Fiona. She longs for the day her Prince Charming comes to rescue her and sweep her off her feet.
​
UGLY DUCKLING comes across as shy and unassuming but she is not afraid to speak her mind when given the opportunity.
​

GINGY / SUGARPLUM FAIRY
(Female - vocal range B3-C#5)
It is possible but not absolute that these roles will be played by the same person.

GINGY - A gingerbread man initially kidnapped by Lord Farquaad. His wit and resolution help him both avoid trouble and inspire the rest of the fairy-tale creatures. This character is portrayed with a puppet, which may be voiced and operated by actor appearing as potentially FAIRY GODMOTHER.
​
FAIRY GODMOTHER is one of the fairy-tale creatures. With immaculate poise and posture, she doesn't have too much to say to the group until her declaration of being a scientologist. A label she wears with pride. There are no specific sides for this role.

WICKED WITCH / BLIND MOUSE / DULOC PERFORMER 1
(Female) – Strong belt voice. Big personality.

It is possible but not absolute that these roles will be played by the same person.
​
WICKED WITCH oozes confidence and has no issues telling Shrek what she really thinks. At the same time, she is one of the more empathetic and selfless fairy-tale creatures. She stands up for those who cannot stand up for themselves and rallies the troops in 'Freak Flag'.
​
DULOC PERFORMER is the first citizen of Duloc we meet. She is all smiles and enthusiasm. She appears to be over rehearsed and over the top in her welcome to Duloc.
​

MAMA OGRE / MAMA BEAR / BLIND MOUSE
(Female) – Strong belt voice. Big personality.
​
It is possible but not absolute that these roles will be played by the same person.
​
MAMA OGRE appears as a head poking through a giant book in the opening number. She sing's the start of 'Big Bright Beautiful World' as a duet with Papa Ogre. She has a smooth, calming vocal quality that contrasts the lyrics she sings about her son being destined for a life of loneliness.
​
MAMA BEAR is a warm loving character and worried about the impact of being evicted on her child. She inspires the other Fairy-Tale Creatures in her verse in 'Freak Flag'
​

BIG BAD WOLF / KNIGHT 1 / DWARF
(Male) – Strong belt voice. Big personality.

It is possible but not absolute that these roles will be played by the same person.
​
WOLF whilst looking intimidating is really just a friendly, crossdressing and down to earth canine. There is no specific singing audition tracks for WOLF.
​
The KNIGHTS have all attempted and failed to rescue the princess. Their lives have been spared by the Dragon who keeps them alive and as prisoners so they can sing backup vocals for her. He is surprisingly upbeat for people in their position.
​
DWARF is the estranged father of Lord Farquaad who appears at the wedding by invitation of the Fairy-Tale Creatures. He has a bone to pick with his son and is disappointed that Farquaad didn't invite him to the wedding.
PIG 3 / KNIGHT 2 / PAPA OGRE / DULOC CITIZEN
(Male) – Strong belt voice. Big personality.

PIG 1 / KNIGHT 3

PETER PAN / GUARD (Scene 3) / BISHOP
(Male) – Strong tenor voice. Agile.
​
It is possible but not absolute that these roles will be played by the same person.
​
PETER PAN is full of wide eyed wonder and seems to bounce around the stage in a graceful yet child like sense of wonder. An agile mover in both dance and how he moves around the stage.
GUARD is one of two speaking Guard roles This one appears in Scene 3 chasing Donkey and attempts to arrest him and Shrek. A pompous and self important guard of Duloc, his brave façade is broken by Shrek to reveal a weak frightened bully.​
​
The BISHOP is a classic stereotype minister presiding over the wedding of Lord Farquaad and Fiona. Being this is the highlight of his already very long career, he is very enthusiastic about the speech he has written and feels dejected when Fiona asks him to "skip to the, I do's"

Audition notes:
For PETER PAN, the tracks for 'Story Of My Life' begin with Wicked Witch's line 'Strife is never ending'. Just sing the lines, "Banished from the town" and "They ridiculed my hat"
